Hundreds more evacuated as lava spews from Canary Islands volcano

Spain’s Canary Islands’ first volcanic eruption in 50 years has forced 5,000 people out of their homes and destroyed about 100 houses.

The volcano shot lava hundreds of metres up on the northwestern island of La Palma in the Cumbre Vieja national park.

Officials are hopeful they will not have to carry out any more evacuations in the sparsely populated area.
