Armored soldiers in Sri Lanka – Is a military takeover looming? | DW News

A state of emergency in Sri Lanka that was to have ended today, has been extended by another day, in a country facing its worst economic crisis in 74 years.

Troops armed with orders to shoot those indulging in violence, are patrolling Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo today. Armored personnel carriers and soldiers with guns have been deployed to prevent rioting and violence. The troop presence on the ground has raised fears of a military takeover of the country.
