Perth USAsia Centre CEO Gordon Flake says it would be an “obvious omission” from Nancy Pelosi’s broad Asia tour if she hadn’t stopped in Taiwan. US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and five other Democratic members of Congress landed in Taipei on Tuesday evening local time, despite repeated warnings from China to avoid the island.
Professor Flake said he doesn’t know if people would “consider it brave” for Ms Pelosi to visit Taiwan.
“It’s something that really is represented in the last 30 plus years of her professional career,” Professor Flake told Sky News Australia.
“People forget that back in 1989 she unfurled a banner in Tiananmen in protest of what happened there in China.
“This has been an issue she’s cared about for a long period of time.”
