‘I felt there was a case for staying’: Retired general reflects on Afghanistan withdrawal

Retired Marine Corps General Frank McKenzie, who was involved in the United States’ withdrawal from Afghanistan, says his advice “ultimately wasn’t taken” by President Biden.

“My advice was that we should stay in Afghanistan, with a troop level of about 2500 people and continue to work with Afghan military on the ground,” he told Sky News host Erin Molan.

“I felt there was a case to be made for staying.

“That advice ultimately wasn’t taken … the President of the United States has to make decisions based on factors that I can’t always be aware of.

“Under our system, he’s the final decision maker.”
