‘Seismic shift’ in German politics with ‘increased presence’ in Indo-Pacific

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles says there is a “seismic shift” in German politics in the face of the “appalling” invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

Germany sent jet fighters to Australia for Exercise Pitch Black and announced it will be participating in the Talisman Sabre exercise next year.

Mr Marles said there has been an “increased presence” of Germany in the Indo-Pacific.

“The decision by the German government to take their defence spending to two per cent of GDP is a massive decision in the context of German politics and the heritage of German policy around defence,” he told Sky News Australia.
