Inside the UK’s first spaceport – BBC News

Newquay Airport is usually home to small aircraft, but now it’s also home to the UK’s first functioning spaceport.  Instead of launching vertical rockets from the site, Spaceport Cornwall uses converted aircraft to carry rockets up to 35,000ft before detaching and launching them into space.  After a successful take off, the company’s maiden mission failed in January 2023 after the rocket experienced an anomaly.  Two more conventional vertical rocket launch facilities are being built in Scotland, meaning the UK space race is now on.
